: Ethical clearance and permission to conduct this study was sought from Directorate of Research, Training and Consultancy at Muhimbili National Hospital (Ref. No.: MNH/TRCU/Perm/2022/087). Mothers of respective neonates were informed about the study, its importance and the steps which were followed; those who understood and agreed to participate were requested to sign a written informed consent before enrollment. For the mothers who were not able to write, thumbprints were taken as proof of consent with an unbiased witness signing their testimony on the same consent form.Confidentiality was maintained during the whole period of study by use of a study identification number assigned to each participant. All neonates received the optimal standard of care offered at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) regardless of whether they accept to participate to the study or not, and all testing were done in accordance to the hospital unit’s guidelines and regulations.
