Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study was approved by the local ethics committee, De Videnskabsetiske Komitéer for Region Midtjylland (case number: 1–10–72-123-15). All participants received verbal and written information about the study and gave written consent prior to inclusion. In accordance with requirements by the ethics committee, for participants aged 15–17, parents also received written information about the study (and were offered verbal information) to ensure that the adolescent’s consent was given under parental supervision. This is in accordance with the ethical approval obtained for the present study and Danish legislation. Specifically, the Komitéloven §9 states that the committee may grant an exception from § 3.2 number 1, and § 4.1 (which require consent from parent or guardian in the case of a minor), if the participant is 15 years old and gives his/her own informed consent. The decision about dispensation is made in consideration of the specific study’s character, imposed risks and stress. Furthermore, and in accordance with the ethical approval obtained for this study, participants (and parents/legal guardian for participants aged 15–17) were informed in the written information about the study, that if we, as part of the study, obtained information suggesting a participant fulfilled criteria for a substance use disorder, the participant (and parents/legal guardian for participants aged 15–17) would be contacted with the aim of providing information to contact a treatment provider. The authors assert that all procedures contributing to this work comply with the ethical standards of the relevant national and institutional committees on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2008.
