: Prior to inclusion in HELIX, all six cohorts had undergone the required evaluation by national ethics committees, obtaining the required permissions for their cohort recruitment, follow-up visits, and for secondary use of pre-existing samples and data. The work in HELIX was covered by new ethics approvals for each cohort by their respective authorities. The ethical committees for each cohort were the following: BiB: Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, EDEN: Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé, INMA: Comité Ético de Inverticación Clínica Parc de Salut MAR, KANC: LIETUVOS BIOETIKOS KOMITETAS, MoBa: Regional komité for medisinsk og helsefaglig forskningsetikk, RHEA: Ethical committee of the general university hospital of Heraklion, Crete. Informed consent was obtained by all participants at recruitment and upon enrolment in the subcohort, and informed consent on behalf of the child was completed by the mother and/or father. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. An ethics task force was established to support the HELIX project on ethical issues, for advice on the project’s ethical compliance, identification and alerting to changes in legislation where applicable. This project was approved by the Norwegian ethical committee, REK (regionale komiteer for medisinsk og helsefaglig forskningsetikk) helse sør-øst with application number: 2013/1628b and project title: HELIX Barn og miljø.
