Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The collection of data in the rural village clusters has been going on for 28 years at the request of the Ministry of Health. Oral consent for surveillance of the women of fertile age and their children is sought from women at first registration. The ongoing data collection in its current form has been approved by the ethical committee in Guinea-Bissau (Comité Nacional de Ética na Saúde) and The National Committee on Health Research Ethics Denmark has given its consultative approval. No separate ethical permissions were sought for the specific analyses of the historical data presented in this paper.
