Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Written informed consent was obtained from all women who participated in this study. No consent was sought from parents or guardian of participants under 16 years as these were considered as emancipated minors who were able to consent for themselves and did not require parental consent. This was done following Kenya Ministry of Health guidelines for conducting adolescent HIV sexual and reproductive health research in Kenya (2015) [CitationRef removed]. The local ethics committee KEMRI Scientific Ethics Review Unit (SERU) ruled that no need for parental consent from study participant’s under 16 years of age was required in this particular case and granted approval for this study.
