Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All study protocols were approved by the Mozambican National Bioethics Committee for Health, by the Committee on Human Research at the University of California at San Francisco, and by the Division of Global HIV/AIDS of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta. For all participants, written informed consent was obtained. The ethics committees approved the inclusion of female sex workers less than 18 years old, who were classified as emancipated minors. They therefore did not require parental consent and were permitted to provide written informed consent. All women, especially those underage, were referred for free legal support to the Office for Women and Children, within the Ministry of the Interior, and the Mozambican League of Human Rights [CitationRef removed, CitationRef removed, CitationRef removed].
