Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Phase 1 (the quantitative phase) utilized data from wave 2 of the WiSe (Wellbeing in Schools) study. Ethical approval was obtained prior to each wave of data collection in the WiSe study by the School of Education Ethics Committee, Queen’s University Belfast. Ethical approval for WiSe wave 2 was granted by the School of Education Ethics Committee, Queen’s University Belfast in February 2014 (ref number 100314). Pupils were informed of the study and provided with information sheets. Opt-in consent was obtained from participating pupils and opt-out consent was sought from parents/guardians prior to data collection. For Phase 2, ethical approval was granted from the School of Medicine, Dental and Biomedical Sciences Research Ethics Committee at Queen’s University Belfast in November 2017 (reference number: 17.46_v3). During this phase, pupils were again informed of the study and provided with information sheets. Similar to phase 1, pupil information sheets and pupil opt-in consent forms, alongside parent/guardian information sheets and opt-out consent forms were obtained prior to participation in phase 2.
