Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Johns Hopkins Medical Institute Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved this protocol. As at the time there was no local IRB functioning in South Kivu province of Eastern DRC, an ad hoc committee of respected Congolese scholars at the Université Catholique de Bukavu and community members reviewed the research and intervention protocols before giving approval for the study. A letter of approval from the Congolese scholars was submitted to the Hopkins IRB.Consent and assent to participate was obtained from all study participants prior to the start of data collection.
: All the participants gave consent for direct quotes from their interviews to be used in this manuscript.
