The ethical approval for the study was obtained from Sudan’s National Health Research Ethics Committee based at the Federal Ministry of Health (number 1–4-20) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s Research Ethics Committee (number 22051). All participants provided verbal informed consent, including explicit permission to record the interview and to publish anonymised quotes from the interview. Verbal informed consent was approved by both the Sudan’s National Health Research Ethics Committee based at the Federal Ministry of Health and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s Research Ethics Committee.
