: The ERICA study was conducted according to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. The Research Ethics Committees of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and all 26 research centers approved the procedures of this study (protocol number 45/2008). Consent to conduct the study was obtained from all departments of education involved and all participating schools.Written informed consent was obtained from all adolescents interviewed in the ERICA. In five Brazilian states, parents or guardians signed a written informed consent forms at the request of the local ethics committees. For the remaining states, parental written consent was obtained only for adolescents with collected blood samples, which were not considered in the present analysis.
