: Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Research Ethics Committee with the certificate number MUHAS-REC-08–2020- 333. The permission to correct data was obtained from the Regional Medical Officer of Dar Es Salaam as well as the District Medical Officers of the three districts where the study was conducted (Temeke, Ilala and Ubungo) and from the Management of Mbagala Hospital, Buguruni health center and Sinza hospital where the study was conducted. Every participant provided the written informed consent prior enrollment into the study. Written informed consent was obtained from parents or legal guardian of participants below 18 years of age. Participants who were not willing to continue with the study were permitted to drop out without any effect to the quality of care they receive at the health facilities. All research activities were performed in accordance the declaration of Helsinki. All participants received the information on where to get the SCD services and information was given freely to those who called to request further information on SCD or guidance to screening their relatives, themselves or their babies.
