Ethics approval and consent to participate
: As this work included field work on animals but not on humans, the “consent to participate”-part is not applicable. All fieldwork protocols were reviewed and approved beforehand by the Institute of Zoology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany and the University of Toronto, Canada. Field work protocols complied with the IUCN Policy Statement on Research Involving Species at Risk of Extinction and existing CITES regulations. This study also adhered to the American Society of Primatologists Principles for the Ethical Treatment of Non-Human Primates. Finally, this study complied with all legal requirements of Madagascar and was approved by the Ministère de l’Environnement, de l’Ecologie et des forêts (permit numbers: 151/17/MEEF/SG/DGF/DSAP/SCB.Re and 82/18/MEEF/SG/DGF/DSAP/SCB.Re).
