: This study was submitted and approved by the review and ethics committee of each institution.This study protocol for the acquisition of human samples was approved by the Emory University Institutional Review Board (IRB00045827). Written and verbal informed consent was obtained from the participating patients preoperatively, and all human participant research were performed in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations.The study protocol for the acquisition of all dog samples was approved by the Ethics Committee on Animal Experimentation of Utrecht University, the Netherlands, in accordance to the 3R (replacement, reduction, and refinement of animal experimentation)-policy (DEC2012.III.02.017). Written and verbal informed consent was obtained from all client owners, and canine treatment adhered to the legal and institutional animal welfare guidelines. All live vertebrae experiments were performed in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations, and released to the client owners.
