: The study was performed according to the ethical principles governing medical research and human subjects as laid down in the Helsinki Declaration (2002 version, ExternalRef removed. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. All patients were informed of all procedures and signed a written informed consent. This is an observational retrospective study and no experimental protocol was applied. Our patients were orthodontically treated following the usual guidelines. The collection of salivary samples and of clinical data, as well as genetic studies, were approved by the Ethics Committee of The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.
