Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval to conduct the study was granted by the Kenyan Medical Research Institution (KEMRI), the University of Nairobi/ Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi University Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenya, and Aga Khan University, Kenya. Approval was also granted by the Ministries of Public Health and Sanitation and Medical Services in Kenya and the Institutional Review Board of the Guttmacher Institute. Verbal consent was obtained from all women presenting for PAC. The use of verbal consent was approved by the ethics committee due to the sensitivity of the research. Participants who were less than 16 years were considered as emancipated minors by virtue of their having been pregnant and having undergone PAC; this is in accordance with what is legally acceptable in Kenya as approved by the ethics committee. All data records were de-identified to prevent any possible linkage to specific clients, providers or facilities.
