: The study was conducted in collaboration with and approved by the Government of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development (MWAGCD) in 2011. At the time of the study, MWAGCD had a Research Committee whose mandate was to review the ethical conduct of all gender-related research studies conducted in the ambit of the ministry. The study was only approved and allowed to go into the field after all the Research Committee’s requirements were met. Participation in the study was voluntary and prior written informed consent was given by all participants. Interviews were conducted in privacy, and participants were assured of confidentiality. The study was conducted in conformance to the World Health Organisation’s Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Research on Domestic Violence against Women, and care was taken to ensure participant confidentiality and to minimize participant distress [CitationRef removed, CitationRef removed].
