: The study approval was obtained from relevant ethics committees of the participating countries; Uganda Virus Research Institute Research Ethics committee (UVRI REC#605) and from the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) (SS#4470) in Uganda, and KEMRI Scientific and Ethics Review Unit in Kenya (SERU#3593) and the National Health Research Ethical Committee (NatHREC) (NIMR#2654) in Tanzania. All participants provided written informed consent before participation in the study, for illiterate participants, the informed consent process was documented with the help of an impartial witness. All study procedures, including compensation for participants’ time (the amount differed by site, depending on what was customary and approved by the relevant ethics committees in each country) were performed in compliance with the principles of the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and guidelines of respective regulatory bodies.
