Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethics approval for the Genomics and Schizophrenia in South African Xhosa people (SAX) study was obtained from the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of Cape Town, the Research Ethics Committees at Rhodes University and Walter Sisulu University. Participants were recruited across both the Eastern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa, with permission from the South African Department of Health. Written informed consent to participate in the SAX study was obtained from each participant during recruitment. Recruitment procedures included explanation of the study aims, methods and expected outcomes in Xhosa, and provision of an information sheet. Participant understanding of the study and capacity to consent was evaluated using the University of California, San Diego Brief Assessment of Capacity to Consent Questionnaire (UBACC).
