Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This research was approved by the Research and Ethics Committee of Makerere University School of Medicine, the Institutional Review Board of Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, and Mulago Hospital Research and Ethics Committee as well as permission from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Makerere University. Participation in this research was voluntary and respondents provided written informed consent. Prospective participants were given assurance that they were free participate and that even if they declined, their decision would not affect the due care that they were entitled to. The study posed potential risk of psychological harm if potential participants or participants were reminded of unpleasant past experiences during their prior hospitalization with acute illness. All the communication with potential participants was done in a respectful and professional manner, and any information about the unpleasant experiences of obstetric complication was made in an empathetic manner.
