: Our study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki [CitationRef removed]. During participant recruitment, special attention was given to participants who had suffered a stroke. The nurse at each rehabilitation centre identified potential participants known to have no or only mild communicative impairments and asked about participation in the study. Further information about the intervention and follow-up interviews was given first by the nurses and then by the interviewers, both orally and in writing, to each family member including the person who had suffered a stroke. They were informed that participation was voluntary and could be terminated at any time for any or no reason. Further, they consented to having the interviews recorded in order to facilitate data analysis and were informed that all data would be anonymised, that all material derived from the interviews would be treated confidentially, and that no individual would be identifiable in the presentation of the study’s results. The ethical approval of the study was obtained from the Ethical Review Board in Sweden (No. 210–101-31 M).
