Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval for the study was given by the Ethic Committee of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (REC reference number: 2012–3; Protocol version 2.0, 29-10-2012). We obtained written informed consent from the manager of each ward prior to data collection. All staff and patients were given an information sheets by the services’ link person with the researcher explaining the aims and background to the study which made it clear that participation in the study was entirely voluntary. The information sheet also specified that by returning the questionnaire the participants agreed to take part in the study. All questionnaires were anonymous, with no personally identifying information collected.

: The Royal College of Psychiatrists funded the trial and also runs the subscription-based peer network of Low Secure Mental Health Services that was evaluated in this study. LA, AQ, AW, ST, SH and MJC were employed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists at the time when the study was conducted. SJ, PB and NT have no financial relationships with any organisations that might have an interest in the submitted work.
