: Ethics clearance was received from the Human Research Ethics Committee at the University of Cape Town (HREC REF:364/2015). Further ethics and permission to conduct research in health facilities was obtained from the Western Cape Department of Health (WC_2015RP42_16) and the City of Cape Town (Ref No: 10498). All methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations provided by the aforementioned ethics committees. Participants were not paid for their participation in the study. Light food and drink refreshments were given to participants during each interview. An N95 respiratory face mask was used during interviews to protect the lead and assistant researcher, as some participants had been diagnosed with TB or MDR-TB. The use of this mask was common in these wards and was not unique to the interview process. Information sheets were distributed to each participant, stating the voluntary terms of engagement, and providing information about the study. Signed informed consent was received from all participants.
