: This study was conducted according to the guidelines of the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki and its later amendments or comparable ethical standards. Ethical approval for the TILDA study was granted by the Faculty of Health Sciences, Trinity College Dublin Research Ethics Committee on May 2, 2008. All participants involved in this study were adults who provided informed consent, and individuals who could not personally consent to participation in the study were excluded in Wave 1 of TILDA. The TILDA data analysed in the present study was based on the publicly accessible, anonymised dataset, available from the Irish Social Science Data Archive (ISSDA) at University College Dublin (CitationRef removed). Researchers who wish to use this dataset are required to submit an application to the ISSDA, however separate ethical approval is not required in order to access these TILDA datasets.
