: The study was approved by the Regional Committee for Medical and Health Research Ethics, Western-Norway (REK Vest, project 7103), Addis Ababa University College of Health Sciences Institutional Review Board (AAU IRB, FS No 00019188) and Norwegian Centre for Research Data (reference code 494369). Potential participants were informed about the objective of the study, that anonymity would be ensured, that participation was voluntary, and that consent could be withdrawn at any given time during the study period before publication. Written informed consent was obtained by all participants before the interviews. All methods were performed in accordance with the Helsinki declaration and general ethical principles regarding human research. Neonatal death and its reporting practices is a sensitive issue for the involved clinicians, and this was recognized and taken into account during interviews. To ensure anonymity, details on our study sites are left out.
