: Ethical approval was obtained from Mbale Regional Hospital Research Ethics Committee and Uganda National Council for Science and Technology in Uganda. Ethical approval was also obtained from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as the study was the basis of a Masters’ research dissertation. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations in ethical approval and consent to participate section.Informed written consent was sought from all participants for their participation. For those participants who were unable to read, the study information was presented to in their preferred local language and in the presence of an independent individual with the ability to serve as the impartial witness. When the participant was unable to provide a signature by their own hand or if unable to write, they provided thumb/finger-print and the impartial witness signed and completed the participant’s name and date.Case-study participants were re-consented at each interview. There was no remuneration for involvement.
