: The study was approved by the Moi University College of Health Sciences/Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital University Institutional Research and Ethics Committee (FAN IREC # IREC/2017/102). It was also approved by the National Commission of Science and Technology (NACOSTI #/P/18/49442/24153). All participants provided informed consent and they were fully aware the study findings were to be shared widely to inform research and care for people with hypertension. With approval of the Ethics Committee, informed verbal consent was obtained for the mabaraza and FGD participants. In Kenya, it is common to use verbal consent during group meetings. However, written informed consent was obtained for the key informant interviews.
