Ethical approval and consent to participate
: The study received ethical approval from the independent Institutional Ethics Committee linked to Ekjut on the 12th of December 2015 (Reference: IEC/EKJUT/11). All participants in the survey were asked for verbal consent after a participant information sheet was read out to them and discussed. Asking for verbal consent was deemed more acceptable than written or thumbprint consent by our Ethics Committee, as respondents were weary of signing consent sheets related to violence despite assurances that datasets would be anonymised.
: We sought and obtained written consent for the inclusion of the case study on sexual violence from the woman concerned, and have changed her and her husband’s names to pseudonyms.
: The authors declare that they have no competing interests.
