Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All experimental procedures involving animals were conducted with the approval of the University of Newcastle’s Animal Care and Ethics Committee (approval number A-2013-322), in accordance with the Society for the Study of Reproduction’s specific guidelines and standards. Inbred Swiss mice were housed under a controlled lighting regime (16 L: 8D) at 21–22 °C and supplied with food and water ad libitum. Prior to dissection, animals were sacrificed via CO2 inhalation.
