Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study was carried out in strict accordance with the recommendations in the Brazilian national guidelines on animal experimentation [CitationRef removed]. The protocol was approved by the Federal University of Pampa Ethics Committee on Animal Use (CEUA - UNIPAMPA) permit number: CEUA- 016/2016. Oral consent was obtained from all equines and canines owners prior to sampling. Since this study did include only minimal animal invasive experiments, the CEUA (Ethics Committee on Animal Use) decided that no written approval was required from owners. Owners were informed that if they participate in the study they would allow the researchers to perform a complete physical and clinical examination and collection of biological samples such as blood and eye secretions for diagnosis of leishmaniosis. The participation in the study would not bring any legal complications and all information collected would be confidential. The owners would have no cost, nor receive any financial advantage.
