Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The use of sentient animals, experimental procedures in chickens and sequencing of field diagnostic samples were approved by the National Director of Animal Health (Reference number 12/11/1/1/8) and the University of Pretoria’s Animal Ethics Committee (Reference number v075–17). H6 avian influenza is a controlled disease in South Africa, reporting is compulsory and therefore the permission of the owners (whose identities and farm locations remain confidential by law) to publish the sequencing results was not required.
