Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval for the study was given by the Waltham Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB). Veterinary hospitals did not have their own ethical review boards and therefore adhered to Waltham AWERB requirements and, veterinarians who were conducting routine veterinary dental treatment followed the principles of Good Veterinary Practice and local regulations. All dogs included in the study were already scheduled to undergo anaesthesia for routine dental treatment. Written client consent was obtained for the collection of plaque samples from their dogs whilst under general anaesthesia for this dental treatment and subsequent use of the samples for research purposes.
