Declarations
:
: The study was approved by the local ethical board for animal studies, in Uppsala, Sweden (Approval number 58 18_20174_2017), and conducted according to the European Union directive 2010/63/EU, the Helsinki convention for the use and care of animals and the National Institute of Health Guidelines. The reporting of the experiment follows the ARRIVE guidelines [CitationRef removed] on the fair use of animals in research. As the PEEP protocol was not considered safe for critically ill patients the porcine experimental model was chosen, offering relevant similarities to human respiratory physiology.
