: Informed consent for the RCT was obtained from all study participants. Ethical approval was obtained from the Uganda National Council of Science and Technology, the Makerere University School of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee, the Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences Research and Ethics Committee, and the University of California, San Francisco, Committee on Human Research. The protocol included permission to share de-indentified placental samples with other researchers. We received permission from the Institutional Review Board of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to use a selection of specimens, with samples correlated only to the patient charactertics data listed in Table InternalRef removed.
