: For work with chickens at the NIH, Public Health Service Animal Welfare Assurance #A4149-01 guidelines were followed according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Animal Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU). These studies were carried out according to the NIAID-NIH animal study protocol (ASP) approved by the NIH Office of Animal Care and Use Committee (OACUC), with approval ID ASP-LMVR102. For work with chickens at the Universidade de São Paulo, work was approved by Comissão de Etica no Uso de Animais (CEUA-ICB/USP); 188/2012 extended until 03/12/2020. Mosquito probing time experiments were evaluated by the TAMU IRB and deemed not to be human subjects research.
