: The study was approved by the Gambia Government/Medical Research Council’s joint ethics committee (ref: 25,474 on 11 June 2021). The proposed study was first discussed with elders in Wellingara village and proceeded only after receiving approval from them. After explaining the purpose of the study to household heads, adults were asked to give written, informed consent before proceeding with the survey. The study was conducted in compliance with principles set out by the International Conference on Harmonization Good Clinical Practice, the Declaration of Helsinki and the ethical requirements of The Gambia.
