Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Researchers from the Center for Nutrition and Health Research of the INSP in the state of Morelos, Mexico, designed and implemented the study. The INSP Research, Ethics and Biosecurity Committees approved the study. Following informational meetings at the health centers mentioned above, individual meetings were held with the children’s mothers/caregivers. Visits were also made to eligible households that had not been represented at the meetings. All caregivers received full details about the objectives, procedures, potential risks and benefits of the study. An informed consent declaration was read to the mothers/caregivers who expressed an interest in participating, and those who accepted were asked to put their signatures or fingerprints on the consent forms, thereby confirming their voluntary participation in the complete study, including the blood draws for a substudy. Six brigades, each coordinated by a supervisor, of trained field workers conducted the invitation to the trial and the recruitment of participants.
