Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The study was conducted in accordance with the most recent version of the ethical principles of the Declaration of Helsinki, which is applicable for national and international regulatory requirements. Ethical approval was obtained both from the Heidelberg University Ethical Committee (S-180/2017), Germany, and the Nouna Health Research Center Ethical Committee, Burkina Faso. Parents of severely undernourished children (z-scores below − 3) were encouraged to visit the closest health care center for consultation. We provided a referral document with financial support for the visit. All caregivers of our study participants provided informed written consent.
