: Tissue samples were provided by the Tissue Bank of the National Center of Tumour Diseases (NCT, Heidelberg, Germany) in accordance with the regulations of the tissue bank and the approval of the Ethics Committee of Heidelberg University. Human HCC cases were surgically resected at the University Hospital of Heidelberg and histologically classified by two experienced pathologists based on established criteria. The study was approved by the institutional ethics committee of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University (application no. S-206/05 and S-376/2018).Animal work was authorized by the German Regional Council of Baden-Württemberg (Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe) according to the EU directive 2010/63EU (application no G-187/19). All experiments were performed in accordance with the institutional regulations of the IBF (Interfakultäre Biomedizinische Forschungseinrichtung, University of Heidelberg) under pathogen-free conditions. The mouse colony was housed under a 12 h light/dark cycle with free access to water and food. Exclusion and termination criteria were defined in the ATBW criteria.
