Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Research Ethical Committee provided a go-ahead for the study to proceed (MU/DRP/AEC/Vol.XVI/127). The ethical clearance for conducting research in Zanzibar was approved by the Zanzibar Medical Research Committee (PROTOCOL NUMBER: ST/0006/JULY/013). A research permit was given by the Zanzibar Research Committee from the Office of Chief Government Statistician. Permission to conduct research in the community was granted from the Second Vice President’s Office through all the three Regional Commissioners with reference (OMPR/M.95/C.6/VOL.VI/2). A written consent was also obtained from caretakers after the purpose and methods of the study had been explained. For adolescents below 18 years of age, permission to participate in the study was granted by their caretakers.
