: Ethical clearance for the research study was obtained from Stellenbosch University (DESC/Seele/Feb2015/1), South Africa and from the National University of Mongolia (17132015–17). In addition, ethical guidelines as stipulated by the International Society of Ethnobiology (2006) were strictly followed at all times. Interviews were only conducted if informed signed consent was given.
: All respondents were informed about the context and objectives of the study as well as the eventual publication of the information gathered, and they were assured that their identities would remain undisclosed. Verbal informed consent was obtained for all photographs and audio recordings.
