Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Kenya Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (SSC/SERU/CGMRC-C 2235). Fifty first-time mothers with newborns were identified by dispensary nurses, community health workers and by other Participants. The study aims were explained by their local community health worker, who asked for permission for the study team to visit them at home, then written informed consent was sought by the study team.
