: The study was conducted in accordance with the WHO’s ethical and safety recommendations for research on domestic violence against women [CitationRef removed]. The main principals to justify this research were also fulfilled according to the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki [CitationRef removed]. During data collection, all measures were taken to ensure that women could get support if it was deemed necessary. Study participants who were screened positive for depressive symptoms or IPV were referred to a nearby health facility for possible social and medical support. Ethical clearance was obtained from Jimma University ethical review board (IRB reference number: RPGC/264/2013) and Tufts University in the United States of America (IRB reference number: 11088). Informed written consent was obtained from all individual participants included in the study. All interviews were conducted in private and confidentiality was ensured for each study participants.
