Change Details: Editor's Note: Readers are advised that this paper reports on a survey conducted in the Central African Republic with non-local ethics approval. It is BMC policy that, in normal circumstances, authors should receive ethics oversight from the country in which they conducted their research. In this instance, the Editors-in-Chief of Conflict and Health have determined that the security situation in the Central African Republic and the sensitive nature of the work conducted meant that it was justified for the authors to seek ethics approval from the Institutional Review Board of the first author’s host institution in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Declarations
:
: IRB approval was obtained from The Comite National D’ethique de la Sante of the DRC Ministry of Health, CNES 001/DPSK/195PM/2022. At each household, interviewers sought informed consent, by describing the purpose of the study, indicating there would be no direct rewards or benefits to participants and specifying that participation was completely voluntary. Interviewers sought verbal consent due to the low levels of literacy in most of CAR and the need to avoid recording unique identifiers. If the interviewee agreed to participate, the interviewer signed a consent line on the data form.
