Ethics approval and consent to participate
: No human or animal data were used. However, for the crowdsourcing approach, ethics approval was applied at the Ethical Committee of the University of Heidelberg. The committee rejected the need for an approval in principle. All public collectors as well as all of the authors dealing with live ticks had to provide information on a complete vaccination schedule to TBE. Geographical data and data of severity of TBE cases (Fig. InternalRef removed) arose from our OWH TBE cohort dataset and the data were recently published in part [CitationRef removed]. Therefore, a statement on ethics approval and consent has already been made there.
: Not applicable.
: TL received funding for travel to the annual ISW TBE meeting (international scientific-working group on tick-borne encephalitis, Vienna, Austria) from Baxter Deutschland GmbH, Unterschleißheim, Germany, and Pfizer Deutschland GmbH, Berlin, Germany. KU, PG, RO, OBH, UF and MT declare that they have no competing interests.
