: This study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NIPD/China CDC, Approval Number: 20130516). All procedures including blood sample collection and clinical examinations complied with the guideline of the Committee and were conducted in accordance with the approved research protocol. All participants were informed that they can leave the programme at any time, free treatment will be provided when diagnosed with echinococcosis and that all data will be kept confidential; and their written informed consent was obtained before commencing the study.
