: Tick samples were collected from animals that were either roadkills or found dead from natural causes, as well as animals that were handled by licensed personnel in hunting seasons. To collect roadkills a permit was received from Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment & Tourism (LEDET) (permit number ZA/LP/87586) and Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gauteng Provincial Government (permit number CPFG-0136).
