: All animal experiments have been performed in accordance with the guidance of the IACUC of BSRC “Alexander Fleming” and in conjunction with the Veterinary Service Management of the Hellenic Republic Prefecture of Attika/Greece (license number: #2199-11/4/2017). Experiments were monitored and reviewed throughout their duration by the respective Animal Welfare Body for compliance with the permission granted. The mice were housed in specific pathogen-free facilities, reared under conditions that conform to national animal research regulations, under the following conditions: room temperature, 22 ± 1 °C; U. R, 55 ± 10%; 12/12 light/dark cycle; and cage size 335 cm2 minimum according to the recommendation 2007/526 EC. The microbiological quality of animals is monitored according to the health monitoring recommendations and guidelines of the FELASA (ExternalRef removed). Animals were euthanized by CO2 narcosis (or cervical dislocation performed by well-trained personnel), at indicated time points. This is the standard method recommended by the FELASA and AVMA. Other criteria for euthanasia included difficulty in breathing, weight loss over 20%, lethargy, dehydration, anorexia, hunched posture, inability to move, body temperature under 36.5 °C, and others (Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council Decision (September 22, 2010).Our analyses with datasets derived from human SFs were based on publicly available data that have been approved by relevant review boards. The datasets were requested from NCBI dbGaP Program datasets (enlisted as project #23790).
