: The study complied with all relevant ethical regulations for work with human cells for research purposes. Islets were purchased from Prodo Laboratories, Inc. which has been granted the right to be a service provider of human islets obtained from human donor pancreases by the US Department of Health and the FDA. Donor organs and processing of those organs for the purpose of distributing human islet cells has been audited by the Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB). In addition to abiding by US laws, Prodo also abides by the regulations of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). Strict, confidential HIPAA policies are in place to maintain the anonymity of each donor. Prodo also obtains the proper consent forms with each organ provided by UNOS. Prodo certifies that informed consent was properly and legally secured and obtained from the donor or the donor’s family (including donor’s legally acceptable representative) in writing, after having been informed of all aspect of the donation of human tissue(s) that are relevant to their decision. Because the donors are brain dead, the institutional review board considers the tissue as “Exempt” from Human Studies Approval.Animal studies and protocols were performed with the approval of and in accordance with guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (IACUC #2015–0107).All research performed in this study followed the Declaration of the Helsinki Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Samples.
