: The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration on Helsinki on Ethical Principles for Medical Research. The protocol was submitted to the Ethics Committee of Northwest and Central Switzerland (EKNZ). The committee decided on July 23, 2019, that the study did not require formal approval according to Swiss legislation (Request 2019 − 00688). However, the committee confirmed that the protocol was in accordance with the general ethical principles for research in humans. All participants gave informed consent by their online participation in the survey. Due to the anonymous nature of the study, consent for participation was not documented at the individual level.

: Clara Koppenburg is a professional rider of the Cervelo Bigla Pro Cycling team. The study was part of her bachelor thesis prepared at the Department of Sport Sciences at the University of Konstanz. Franziska Saxer is a trained general, trauma and orthopaedic surgeon and currently works in osteoarthritis research. She is member of the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel and member of the Basel Academy for Quality and Research in Medicine. Werner Vach is educated in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. He is currently Senior Researcher in Applied Methodology at the Basel Academy for Quality and Research. Dietmar Lüchtenberg is lecturer and member of the scientific staff in Training and Coaching at the Department of Sport Sciences at the University of Konstanz and has supervised the bachelor thesis. Andreas Goesele is CMO at the Swiss Olympic Medical Center, crossklinik Basel. He was Swiss Olympic Medical Team Doctor at various Olympic games.
