Ethics approval and consent to participate
: All protocols involving animals (challenge procedures of experimental <i>N. caninum</i> infection, monitoring of pregnancies, blood samplings of dams and newborn calves, and euthanasia method used for anaesthetized animals) were approved by the Animal Research Ethics Committee of the Principado de Asturias, Spain (reference number PROAE 25/2016). To enhance animal well-being and minimize suffering, good clinical practices were also performed. Likewise, current Spanish (Law 32/2007, R.D. 53/2013) and European (Council Directive 2010/63/EU) legal requirements and guidelines regarding experimentation and animal welfare were considered to carry out these experiments.
